Annual Gifts Affected
By Two Major Factors

Most of this issue of the Lycoming College
Report is devoted to the annual report of gifts
and grants received during the preceding cal-
endar year. A summary of the total amount
contributed from all sources during the year
is summarized elsewhere on this page.

Although the total of $1, 180, 633. 74 is con-
siderably higher than the $538,217. 18 con-
tributed last year, the Annual Fund giving
decreased by approximately $19, 000 from
$120,439.50 in 1977 to $101,513.12. Two
major factors are responsible for the con-
trasting figures: The Partners in Progress
Campaign to raise funds to help finance con-
struction of a new physical education/recre-
ation center and the timing of state and fed-
eral grants.

While the annual giving is based on a calen-
dar year, the total received from govern-
ment sources in any one calendar year is
often affected by the date on which certain
grants are received. For example, the gov-
ernment grant total of $163,335 in 1977 is
considerably less than the $591,023.91 figure
found in the 1978 summary. Because govern-
ment agencies often distribute grants when
they are authorized to do so and not accord-
ing to a time schedule, a state grant of
$126,945 did not arrive until after the end of
the 1977 calendar year. That amount, along
with the $182,078.91 received for 1978,
which did arrive prior to the end of the year,
provides a considerable contrast in the total.

The second major reason for both the larger
total gifts and grants figure and the smaller
Annual Giving total is directly related to the
Partners in Progress Campaign. The fund
failed to reach a goal of $125, 000 because a
number of major contributors to the Annual
Giving Fund reduced their gifts in 1978 to
contribute to the capital gifts campaign, and
a $200,000 grant from the Pew Foundation
received last year as an advance gift to the
Partners in Progress Campaign is included
in the 1978 totals.

DR. GEORGE S. SHORTESS, 82,
PROFESSOR EMERITUS, DIES

k Services were held February 28, 1979, in
Socorro, N.M., for Dr. George S. Shortess,
82, professor emeritus of biology at Lycom-
ing College, who died February 25 after an
illness of several months. Burial was in the
Socorro Cemetery.

Dr. Shortess was a member of the Lycoming

kins University and Columbia University and

Oliver Harris, 63
t'elopment Director

Oliver E. Harris,
1 63, director of de-
velopment at Ly-
coming for the last
16 years and edi-
tor of the Lycom-
ing College Report
since 1974, died in
the Williamsport
Hospital on Febru-
ary 24, 1979, after
an illness of approx-
imately four months. Funeral ser-
vices were held on Tuesday, February
27, in St. Luke Lutheran Church,
where he was a member, with burial
in the Montoursville Cemetery.

Mr, Harris was Lycoming's first full-
time director of development. Before
the office was instituted as part of the
administrative structure early in 1963,
the responsibility for development was
delegated to the office of the assistant
to the president on a part-time basis.
Director of development was the sec-
ond administrative post Mr. Harris

WHERE THERE'S A WILL, THERE'S A WAY!

But remember also, where there is no will,
there is no way for you to leave any part of
your estate to your favorite charity. The
estates of those who die without wills are
divided up according to law, and inevitably
go to the deceased's relatives, close or dis-
tantly removed, or to the state. So, in effect,
what you fail to do, the state will do for you —
but your wishes may not be fulfilled.

Warrior Wrestlers Win
Third MAC Crown in Row

A number of Warrior athletes won individual
honors and the wrestling team captured the
Middle Atlantic Conference championship
for the third consecutive year during post
season swimming and wrestling tournaments.

Chris Tremel and Tim Spruill capped their
1978-79 years by gaining All-America recog-
nition for finishing in the top eight in their
weight classes at the annual Division in
NCAA tournament in Areata, Calif. Tremel
was the runner-up in the 177-pound class at
the national championship meet and Spruill
was seventh at 167 pounds. The Warriors,
who were represented by four wrestlers,
placed 13th in a field of 110 teams competing
in the meet. Also representing Lycoming
were heavyweight Dick Driver and John
O'Shea at 118 pounds. All four qualified for
the tournament by winning individual cham-
pionships at the MAC the previous week.

Lyco swimmers gaining recognition at the
annual conference swim meet included Glenn
Klages, who became one of the few Warriors
in recent years to win a medal when he set a
school record of 2:10.64 and finished sixth
in the 600-yard backstroke. He also set a
school record of :59. 5 in the 100-yard back-
stroke while finishing eighth. Mark Fultz,
although swimming to a school record of
1:55,3 in the 200-yard freestyle, could do no
better than 13th in the tough competition.
Another school record of 3:59.9 was set in
the 400-yard medley by Klages, Fultz, Bob
Lewis and Bill Raynor in an eighth-place
finish. The 400-yard freestyle relay team
comprised of the same swimmers finished
ninth.
